For this post I am introducing a new segment- Foodify. My new found love for cooking/food blogs has inspired me to pair music and cooking into one project (that along with the site Drinkify- www.drinkify.org). For those unfamiliar with Drinkify, it is a site that matches a song with the appropriate drink. In Foodify I will be doing the same but with food; pairing awesome, delicious, easy-to-make dishes with a corresponding song/album/artist that will make for the best eating experience ever.
In this first edition of Foodify I paired Vampire Weekend's "Horchata" and Horchata together- a pretty obvious combination. Ok, so I’m pretty much coping Drinkify on this one but I couldn't pass it up. The next one will be more creative, I swear.
The drink without the song is pretty great but drinking ice cold, milky, refreshing horchata, not in Decemeber, but on a hot, summer day WHILE listening to Vampire Weekend’s tropical-esque jam, is the ultimate experience. But actually listen to all of Contra while you are at it, it's the perfect soundtrack to this beverage. You'll feel like you're on holiday!
Create this moment by following the recipe below (courtesy of Kelsey Nixon- www.Foodnetwork.com). Feel free to comment below with your Foodify ideas!
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup blanched almonds
- 1/2 cup white rice
- 2 cinnamon sticks, plus ground cinnamon or grated cinnamon stick for serving
- 3/4 cup sugar
- Ice, for serving
- Bring 2 cups of water, the milk, almonds, rice and cinnamon sticks to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer until the rice is tender, about 30 minutes. Remove the cinnamon sticks and cool completely.
- Working in batches, if necessary carefully transfer the mixture to a blender and puree until smooth. Pour into a pitcher. Stir in the sugar and add enough water to make a total of 8 cups. Chill. Serve in tall glasses over ice. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
